Alert: 1000s Of Marchers on Milwaukee Avenue

Thousands of religious pilgrims will be walking northwest on Milwaukee Avenue Tuesday afternoon, evening and night as they head to Maryville for the Our Lady of Guadalupe religious feast day.

 

 

Throughout the afternoon and evening Tuesday and into the wee hours of Wednesday, thousands of religious pilgrims will be walking on Milwaukee Avenue northwestbound through Niles and Glenview.

Motorists are advised to be alert. To avoid having to cross the procession, take the Dempster Street underpass, which goes underneath Milwaukee Avenue. 

The thousands of Catholic pilgrims are doing a devotional walk from Chicago churches to the Our Lady of Guadalupe shrine at Maryville in Des Plaines. The feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe is Dec. 12, but Masses and observances start Dec. 11.

The city of Des Plaines has issued a traffic alert for Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday afternoon. Des Plaines is expecting 80,000 to 100,000 pilgrims.

Members of Niles VIP (volunteers in policing) team have said in prior years that the marchers are devout, respectful and often sing religious hymns as they walk.
