UPDATE, 10:01 a.m. Monday: Much of northern Illinois is now under a winter storm warning from 3 a.m. to midnight Tuesday.

The National Weather Service in Chicago says snowfall amounts of 6 to 9 inches can be expected, with locally higher amounts possible. Snowfall rates could reach 1 or 1.5 inches per hour.

"This will impact both rush hours on Tuesday, with the higher potential for heavy snowfall during the late afternoon and early evening rush hour," National Weather Service officials said.

The warning includes the following counties: Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake and McHenry.

UPDATE, 4:53 p.m. Sunday: A winter storm watch is now in effect for much of northern Illinois.

The watch, which will be in effect from late Monday night through Tuesday evening, includes the following counties: Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Lake, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, McHenry and Will.

While the track of the storm is still being monitored, the National Weather Service in Chicago says "at this point, areas in the watch area have a strong probability of accumulating snowfall, which will likely exceed 6 inches across at least some portion of the watch area."

Original story, 3 p.m. Sunday: Meteorological spring officially began March 1, but don't let that fool you into thinking the weather's going to start getting warmer just yet.

Northern Illinois could once again be hit with another winter storm this week. Last week's storm dumped anywhere from 4.5 inches of snow in Algonquin to 11.7 inches in Beach Park.

The National Weather Service in Chicago says "another winter storm is forecast to move into the region Tuesday, bringing the potential for significant snow accumulation." Where exactly will the heaviest snow fall—and just how much will we get? Meteorologists aren't quite sure yet.

"There continues to be uncertainty in the exact track of this storm system into Tuesday, which leads to low confidence on where the heaviest snow will fall," according to the National Weather Service in Chicago.

However, some areas could get 6 inches of snow or more with this snowstorm, National Weather Service officials say.

"AccuWeather.com meteorologists are expecting snowfall accumulations on the order of 6-12 inches from Fargo, ND, through Minneapolis, MN, through the southern suburbs of Chicago," Brian Edwards, a meteorologist with AccuWeather.com, wrote in his forecast summary.

Some counties in western Illinois are already under a winter storm watch.

So just what can we expect this week in our area?

There's a 20 percent of snow after noon on Monday with a high of 33. On Monday night, the forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of snow.

Snow is likely on Tuesday, with a 90 percent chance during the day and 70 percent Tuesday night. The forecast high for Tuesday is 32.

Sunshine will return Wednesday through Friday, with highs ranging from 34 on Wednesday to 43 on Friday. Skies will be partly cloudy most nights this week, according to the National Weather Service.

There's a slight chance of showers on Saturday with a high near 43.
