Cars Crash After Driver Allegedly Ignores Stop Sign

Police said she didn't seem to realize the intersection had a stop sign. Arrest information is supplied by the Niles Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Mariela Avila-Vilchez, 19, of North Mason Street, Chicago, was charged with DUI/Drugs, a class 4 felony, and DUI after police found her car on Dec. 30, just before 5:30 a.m., near Howard Street and Oak Park Avenue with severe driver's side damage from a crash.

Another vehicle, driven by an Addison man, had also been involved in the crash. It had severe front end damage and was in the middle of the Howard and Oak Park intersection.

The Addison man told police he had back and neck pain and that Avila-Vilchez's vehicle had disobeyed the stop sign on northbound Oak Park Avenue at Howard Street, and that she had driven in front of him and his car struck hers, according to the police report.

Avila-Vilchez told police she was in pain but didn't specify where. She told police she didn't know of any stop sign on Oak Park Avenue, according to the report. Police said they detected the odor of alcohol on her breath, and noted she told them she had drunk a 40-ounce bottle of Old English beer about 45 minutes prior, and smoked half of a cannabis and cocaine cigarette about an hour prior.

When asked for a driver's license and proof of insurance, she produced only a Mexican Consulate identification card, according to the report.

Niles Fire Department paramedics transported both injured parties to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. With Avila-Vilchez' consent, the hospital turned over her blood and urine samples to police for lab testing, police said.

Avila-Vilchez was also cited for failure to yield at a stop sign, disobeying a stop sign, no headlight, no valid insurance and no valid driver's license--never issued. Her court date is Jan. 9 in the Skokie branch of the Cook County courts.

Dennis Samelak of Niles was charged with DUI on Jan. 1, just after midnight, when police observed his vehicle crossing over lane markings in the 7400 block of Milwaukee Avenue, and narrowly swiping the side of another moving vehicle, police said.

According to the report, Samelak showed signs of impairment on field sobriety tests. His court date is Jan. 17 in Skokie.
