Farmers' Market Draws Large Crowd for Labor Day Weekend

Market celebrated weekend with fresh food and live music.

More than 700 local residents came out to enjoy the sultry morning at the Morton Grove Farmers’ Market last Saturday.

Patrons enjoyed fresh crepes, lemonade, doughnuts, snacks, berries and more while shopping. Featured Vendor of the Week Providence Farm Randy Book from Belvidere, Illinois brought three of his baby goats for children to pet and admire. Live music from the Perltones entertained shoppers who found plenty of late summer produce, such as Mirai corn, beets, carrots, potatoes, Swiss chard, berries and apples.

This Saturday the market hosts Scouting Day, an event to celebrate scouts of all stripes from the area including Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Campfire USA. Scouts wearing their uniforms and bringing a canned good for the local food pantry will receive a free treat at the welcome booth. A flag ceremony performed by a local Boy Scout troop will be held at 10 a.m. followed by a moment of silence to honor the victims of 9/11.

Other activities will include a banner to be signed by patrons who have been scouts, organizational tables showcasing scouting skills and community service projects. Also, planned is the Urban Worm Girl demonstrating compost techniques with worms, scout songs sung around the Market, bingo with prizes at 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., and live music from the Hillions String Band.

On Sept. 24 the Market will present its second annual Harvest Fest hosted by Bath Fitter of Chicago North, complete with hay rides around the market, a Radio Flyer wagon giveaway, pumpkin decorating, a bouncy house, balloon artist RC Juggles, live music from Honky Tonk Parade, and, this year, a homemade pie contest at 11 a.m. Those interested in registering for the pie contest should contact the market manager at 847-750-MGFM (6436) for more information.

The Morton Grove Farmers’ Market is presented by the Morton Grove Chamber of Commerce and Industry each week through October 15th at 8930 Waukegan Road. For more information, go to www.MGFarmersMarket.com or www.facebook.com/MGFarmersMarket.
