He may have lost his balance, police reported.

Paramedics and police were called to a home in the 7600 block of Waukegan Road Saturday at about 11 a.m. after a resident had fallen.

The man's 53-year-old son said he had gotten his father a donut from Dunkin Donuts at 7 a.m., then left for a doctor appointment, according to a police report.

When he returned shortly before 11 a.m., he saw his father, Vincenzo Favia, 85, lying at the foot of the stairs, and went to him to try to wake him up, according to a police report. He saw a pool of blood and said the elder man felt cool to the touch, police said.

Paramedics arrived and attempted to resuscitate the father, but could not, and he was pronounced dead.

Police suggested the father may have been walking up the stairs, lost his balance and fallen, according to the report. The Cook County medical examiner's office is examining the body; police said no foul play is suspected.

Woman charged with DUI after driving in wrong direction
