Man, 90, Tricked, Robbed In Home-Entry Ruse
Two men came to the front door saying they needed to check something in the home. When they left, the elderly couple's jewelry was missing. An arrest is merely an accusation, not evidence of a conviction.
A 90-year-old man and his wife, who live in the 6800 block of Jonquil Terrace, were victimized Jan. 15 just after 5:45 p.m. when two men came to the front door of their home, according to police. They told the wife the house next door had contaminated water and that they needed to check the water in the victims' home. The first offender walked into the kitchen and ran the faucet. He asked if there were a faucet in the basement, and the wife took one of the offenders into the basement, inadvertently leaving the front door open, according to the report. The offender was in contact with someone via a two-way radio, police said, and the victims did not see any other offenders enter their home. The first offender told the victims their water was safe and left. The following day, the wife noticed an earring on the floor and made the discovery that several pieces of jewelry were missing. Police are investigating.
Horacio Muro-Garcia, 22, of Des Plaines, was charged with DUI Jan. 18 at 3:20 a.m. after police observed him turning left on a red arrow, to go west on Golf Road from northbound Milwaukee Avenue, according to the report; the officer then clocked him driving 50 mph in a 35 mph zone.
Police stopped him and observed the odor of alcohol on his breath and slurred speech, they said. At one point his vehicle started rolling away until the officer got his attention and had him place the gear shift lever in "park" mode, according to the report. Muro-Garcia admitted drinking four beers and two shots of whiskey while at a bar for his birthday, police said, and he showed impairment on field sobriety tests. He was also cited for disobeying a red light and speeding. His court date is Feb. 8 at the Cook County courts in Skokie.
