Moms Talk: Beating the Heat
When the sun's pummeling your house, how do you stay cool but keep the costs down?
Welcome to "Moms Talk," our weekly Wednesday feature about a parenting topic of local interest.
Join the conversation with your comments, questions and answers to keep the discussion rolling. Feel free to use links to point your neighbors toward businesses, services, events or volunteer organizations around town.
We'll also have members of our Moms Council weigh in with questions and comments.
This week's question: This week, temperatures are bumping up against the century mark. How do you keep cool without breaking the bank? What are your rules for the kids in this kind of heat?

We've been jumping into Harrer and Oketo pools as soon as we get our chores and summer homework done for the day. Giving the kids a little bit of math, reading, writing or science each day helps them to stay in practice for when school resumes. They may complain, but swimming at the pool is a great motivator.
We have been so impressed by the pool staff. I am usually in the pool with my kids, but its good to know the lifeguards are watching carefully. It was about $100 back in the spring, and we have certainly gotten our monies worth. If you don't have a pass, you could win one at the Morton Grove Park District Day at the Morton Grove Farmers' Market this Saturday from 8am to 1pm at 8930 Waukegan Road, they are giving away a 6 pass card each hour!

We've been going to see some movies to stay cool, but if you don't want to spend money, a sprinkler in the backyard does the trick! Plus, the grass appreciates it, as well.

We have been enjoying a lot of fresh fruit smoothies to keep cool this summer. Freeze berries, cherries, bananas, peaches, etc. (hulled, seeded, chopped, etc.), blend with milk, and sweeten with honey. It's a refreshing way to get fruit and fluids into my active kids! The Morton Grove Farmers' Market has a great selection of fresh fruit and honey every Saturday.
