A long week for Marty Moylan is coming to an end. The Des Plaines community member, volunteer, alderman, mayor, Democrat, and now elected state representative of the 55th Illinois House District won a closely fought battle with Park Ridge Republican Susan Sweeney by 2,585 votes. In the end it was Moylan: 20,715, 53.32 percent nosing out Sweeney: 18,130, 46.68 percent.
Moylan was elected mayor in 2009, second ward alderman in 2007, and has been active in community projects in Des Plaines for more than 30 years. He said he will resign sometime in December. City council meetings are scheduled for Dec. 3 and Dec. 17.
Finalizing the city’s budget, other “paperwork,” and speaking with Des Plaines City Manager Michael Bartholomew and other department heads are on Moylan’s radar.
“Right now it’s only the second day after I’ve been elected so I am at city hall, I’ll be going to city hall,” Moylan said. “I’ll be making sure that all the business is done and completed, I’ll be going through the holidays.”
Peter Friedman, of Holland and Knight law firm representing Des Plaines, said city council members could choose whether or not to discuss the appointment of an interim mayor in closed executive session, and would be required by state law to choose a sitting alderman as the temporary mayor in an open public meeting, but there is no timeframe requirement in the law. Des Plaines will elect a new mayor in the consolidated election in March 2013.
“I will make sure that any paperwork will be signed, and any projects that I have power over will be completed,” Moylan said.

In the event that a city council meeting takes place without an acting, or interim, mayor, a pro tem mayor may be appointed to run the meeting, Friedman said.

Wow! Some sore losers really want to poison the well. Let's look at the facts, as mayor of Des Plaines, Marty Moylan shrunk the size of government, cut excessive spending, balanced the budgets and held the line on taxes. Because of Moylan's fiscally conservative approach to management, the City of Des Plaines lowered it's debt, increased it's surplus reserve funds and it's rating was increased to help lower interest rates when they refinanced the City's debt. Additionally, he reigned in other public sector bodies - like the library to cut their budgets while improving services.
As a result, the voters from Des Plaines didn't fall for the lies that the Sweeney campaign tried to push. Election Day showed who they trusted.

Marty Moylan has been a good neighbor, good alderman and good and responsible mayor. I anticipate and expect the same as he represents us in Springfield.
