Multiple Head Injuries Contributed to Chemical Tank Victim's Death

Bernardo Martinez was found without his protective gear on after the fatal accident in Wheeling last week.

Bernardo Martinez, the 37-year-old Cicero man who died last week after falling into a chemical tank at a Wheeling factory, suffered multiple head injuries after falling into the tank from the structure's 50 foot top, the Journal & Topics reports.

Martinez' employer, Phoenix Industrial cleaning, has set aside financial support for the man's wife and two children, the Journal & Topics reports.

When fire crews first arrived at the Sunnyside Corporate in Wheeling where the accident happened, it was clear to them almost immediately that the victim could not be saved, according to Wheeling fire chief Keith MacIsaac.

When Martinez' body was recovered, he was not wearing protective gear meant to help people work in those chemical conditions, according to an ABC affiliate in Missouri.
