Teenager Shot, Killed

A 19-year-old Evanston resident was shot and killed in the 1800 block of Brown Avenue Thursday evening, police say.

Police were called to the scene after witnesses heard several shots fired around 6:15 p.m., according to a press release from the Evanston Police Department. When officers arrived, they found 19-year-old Justin Murray lying in the street, police say.

Murray was transported to Evanston/North Shore University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police Cmdr. Jason Parrott told Patch that Murray is a resident of the 1800 block of Brown Avenue.

Murray’s cousin, 19-year-old Tyler Davis, was visibly shaken as he stood outside his the house Friday morning, recalling the incident. Davis said he and Murray had just left his grandmother's house and walked out to the sidewalk to go to the store when a gunman opened fire. The shots narrowly missed his body as they struck his cousin.

St. Jude Donation Jar, Presents Stolen

A donation jar and a few dozen presents were stolen from an Arlington Heights apartment complex while the offices were closed for Thanksgiving Day, police said. 

Through the fireplace, the offender or offenders snuck into the main office of Tranglewood Apartments to steal The St. Jude Children's Research Hospital donation jar and ransack the delivery room, full of packages and presents that had been delivered to people who live in the complex.

Stored for resident pickup, 35 packages were taken from the Tranglewood Apartment office, located at 2134 S. Goebbert Road. An additional 17 packages were opened but left inside the storage room, police said.

Man Dies After Falling into Chemical Tank

Wheeling Fire Chief Keith MacIsaac has confirmed that the man who fell into a tank earlier today at Sunnyside Corporation, has died, according to the Daily Herald.

The 6,000 gallon tank was filled methylene chloride.

The man, whose identity has not been made public, was hired to clean the tank, the Daily Herald reports. The case has now been turned over to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Maine West Hazing Accusations Mount

Allegations continue to emerge in reports of hazing and bullying on Maine West High School athletic teams.

Three plaintiffs were added to a lawsuit Wednesday which names D-207 administrators, faculty, coaches and staff. Four families, three involving soccer players and one involving a baseball player, have made accusations.

The mother of the student who was reportedly assaulted in May 2008 while on the baseball team spoke to reporters with her attorney, Antonio Romanucci, about why she joined the suit at the law firm’s Chicago office on Wednesday.

The woman's identity was being witheld to protect the identity of the student.

Cause of Man's Death Still Unclear

The cause of death for Vance Nwankwo of South Barrington is still undetermined two-and-a-half weeks after his body was found.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said Nwankwo’s autopsy results are pending toxicology. Toxicology results typically take six to eight weeks to come in.

The 25-year-old went missing after leaving a Schaumburg nightclub on Oct. 30. His body was found in a pond near his home on Nov. 9. South Barrington Police told ABC7 that foul play is not suspected, but family and friends of Nwankwo question the validity of that statement.
