Santorum's Classmates Plan Niles Protest

They say most Catholics don't agree with his positions, and he goes against Catholic bishops' teaching on some issues. Carmel High School alumni will protest outside Northridge Prep.

A group of presidential candidate Rick Santorum's former classmates have released this statement:

Republican Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum, a 1976 alumni of Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein, IL, will face a group of demonstrators from his alma mater as he holds a rally at Northridge High School in Niles, IL (Friday at 7 p.m.).

Earlier: Santorum Coming To Niles Friday

The protesters will demonstrate in support of Gay, Lesbian, Bi and Trans equality and against Santorum's conservative positions on a number of social issues. Close to 400 members have joined the Facebook page "Carmel Catholic Alumni Against Rick Santorum."

Martha Ann Cahill Weaver, Carmel Catholic class of 1967, who is active with her local chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) said; "I'm embarrassed that Santorum attended Carmel. . . I am deeply saddened that he could so easily write off an entire group of human beings."

Demonstrators feel it is important to counter Santorum's anti-gay hate, to set an example to students. Santorum's statements against the LGBT community have contributed to a culture of fear in schools around the country. The protesters want bullied students to know that "It Gets Better."

Polls show that the majority of American Catholics support gay rights, contraception and women's right to choose. Santorum has taken positions opposed to Catholic Bishops statements on war, unions and immigrants.

Jim Wilkins, a 1976 Carmel Catholic alumni said, "two key things I was taught at Carmel and Santa Maria were that you treat everyone fairly and equally and how you treat the most disadvantaged among us defines you as a person. Santorum fails on both points."

I'm not a Santorum guy, but protesting him on gay issues seems over blown. Christian belief is not friendly to the sexual practices of homosexuals. Our country tries to honor the traditions of all faiths which universally are opposed or silent on same sex behavior. I wish all politicians would stop using faith and sex as political tools. As a Christian I will never support legislation that compromises my values, but as a follower of Christ I will always offer kindness and compassion. I don't see why that is taken as being inhumane on any level.

It is presumptuous to claim that Santorum is not compassionate towards any one group of people. I understand Santorum to support social legislation that's constitutional and held to the definition of the given term. Marriage is defined as between man and a woman. Civil Union is totally different and does not devalue the institution of marriage as it is rightfully defined. This alumni group should consider approaching their classmate with more class and maturity. As educated Christian adults, the alumni would be more effective by conducting a legitimate discussion about the difference between marriage and civil union. Maybe they would be surprised by Santorum's answer? Maybe this alumni group should try "putting the shoe on the other foot". Did Santorum take away more from his Catholic education at Carmel then this particular alumni group? Is the alumni group rejecting the doctrine of the church? Just because someone defends the institution of marriage doesn't make them a harsh bigot. Let's consider those who value and defend the sacred sacrament as it is defined in the Bible. Civil union legislation would recognize a non-traditional relationship and legally allow the couple to enjoy the same benefits as those who have also received the sacrament of marriage in a church. Effectively, civil union would leave the religion out and respect doctrine. This alumni group needs to reconsider their approach on Friday. Respect others as you would want to be respected. Pray for guidance.

This isn't about sex, or even about religion. Its about the freedom to live without persecution. Attitudes like Santorum's are dangerous to Americans. Most people of faith dont believe in what he has to say. He needs to quit trying to represent people that dont want him.

Nick,
Persecution: a program or campaign to exterminate, drive away, or subjugate a people because of their religion, race, or beliefs. Do you believe in rule of law? If we live in a society without rule of law, there is no protection against persecution on one another's liberties. The debate is on developing fair laws which support the first amendment. Please define what you mean by Santorum's "attitude" and why most people of faith don't follow him? If we are talking about the institution of marriage, isn't Santorum correctly defending the religious liberties of those who value the sacrament of marriage? If your agrument is to not persecute gay "marriage", then shouldn't you be advocating a non-religious solution such as civil union as to not "persecute people of religious institutions"? I would be careful about saying that "most people of faith don't believe in Santorum".

What a huge waste of time. Have fun standing out protesting and being ignored. I mean, it's not like this fool will get elected anyway, so you are all worrying about nothing.

Maybe you should all go protest something worthwhile, like the fact your federal government refused aid to Illinois residents impacted by the recent tornados, despite them giving out millions of aid to other countries in the same span for free.

Standing up for fundamental human rights and opposing prejudice count among the most worthwhile and noble acts the average citizen can engage in. I would remind the poorly named "Common Sense" that all Americans benefit from the efforts of civil rights protesters throughout our country's history. Just because Santorum is unlikely to win the Republican nomination, let alone the Presidency, does not mean he can be allowed to spread his message of intolerance unchallenged.

RIGHTS FOR ALL INCLUDES SANTORUM

Support equality in regards to your final statement, our most pivotal right is the right to freedom of speech. So in fact he can spread his message all he wants. As educated human beings we have the right to not listen to him and move on. Welcome to the US of A. We lose that right than we have nothing. I too do not support Santorum however I do support his right to speak freely and his ability to run for office. I would hope this great country continues to offer that so if I one day choose to run for office, I can.

Personally these people, my former alumni, are wasting their time - considering the quality of education that came out of Carmel HS at that time, I'm wondering how these protesters graduated. Ricks message is pretty clear, and they aren't getting it or are lazy.

Bottom line guys - all he is really saying is that we should be an advanced enough civilization that we do not need to make these items part of government. Rights? you have them - what you don't have is people in the community that accept what lifestyle you choose - this is none of the business of government. A mistake continually made for decades in this country.

Mac,
I agree with you. Although, I think the problem lies with insurance benefits and other legal matters that spouses are privileged to under a marriage license, which is where the government comes into play. I think the debate is whether to allow gay couples to legally obtain privileges like those in a traditional marriages. This is where the debate gets fiery. I would hope that those who advocate for gay rights acknowledge the difference between the religious sacrament of marriage and the legal rights for benefits. Civil union by the State, NOT the church, would provide legal rights to benefits and at the same time respect the religious doctrine by not defining it as a "marriage" which is clearly defined in the Bible as a union between a man and a woman. Does it simply come down to a license distinction? State Civil Union License vs a Marriage License?

400 "members" joining a facebook page is a lot different than 400 showing up on private property at Northridge Prep to demonstrate. Santorum follows Catholic teaching and has pure motives. Nothing new here. He's fresh and we should all admire him for that. This, I think, is why he's rising in the polls as he seems to be. Gays do themselves a disserve when they become roudy and rude. The entire country laughs at San Francisco when those gays hog and take over an event.

Santorum follows Catholic teaching? Have you ever heard of the Just War Theory? What part of invading Iran (which Santorum supports) is justified by the Just War Theory? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_war_theory)

Santorum is fresh? I am not a Roman Catholic, like the Bishops who completely disagree with Santorum, but I have to agree with the Bishops. When you were little, were attracted to same sex children when you were 6 years old? As a former first grade teacher, we knew who would be gay or not. It is apparently, more difficult for parents to except, which is WHY people didn't understand San Francisco, and why it was important. Being gay is not a choice of 6 year old children, and denying it helps no one.

Patrick,
The radical leaders of Iran want to attack and eliminate all infidels. Anyone who doesn't believe what they believe must die. As a Christian, that is very threatening. Planning to execute "non-believers" is a direct threat and a proclamation of war. Doesn't that meet "Just War Theory"? Doesn't a candidate for the President of the United States have the moral obligation to suggest that he/she would protect their people from viable threats?

Which issues do the Catholic Bishops not support Santorum on and why?

7kidchaos,
You are right. Santorum is "fresh" because he speaks for moral values. I often wonder why some are so offended with candidates who openly discuss the importance of moral values? It's quite puzzling really. Why in the world would we not want a candidate who speaks from the heart? This does not mean vigorous debate should be waved. Not everyone can agree on everything all of the time and we must all be willing to work together and compromise. But doesn't a candidate of good merit and strong faith deserve to be at least taken seriously rather than immediately dismissed? Wouldn't it be easier to trust someone who shows strong character than someone we question their personal merit? Yes, it would be refreshing, wouldn't it?!!!

Rick Santorum would be a great president during a time when so many are struggling. He shows strong morals and values in his dedication to his family -- loving father of 7 and devoted to his disabled daughter, what an inspiration! Such a model family would be the pride of our nation in the White House! He shows diligence and an exceptional work ethic the way he is campaigning with so little funding compared to the other candidates! With every newscast we find him more inspiring and we think he will make a great leader for our nation during this difficult time.
