Schakowsky: Protect Women From Rape, Beatings
The Congresswoman wrote an op-ed for Politico.com today urging support for the International Violence Against Women Act. She cited her experiences meeting women who had been raped as a weapon of war.
"We refuse to stand by as one billion of our sisters are raped, beaten, or otherwise sexually assaulted," wrote U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky in a commentary today on Politico.com.
She wrote about her visit to an organization in the Democratic Republic of Congo that helps women heal after being systematically raped and otherwise maltreated during wartime.
Schakowsky urged that the Violence Against Women Act be reauthorized in Congress.
She also urged support for her International Violence Against Women Act, to help fight violence around the world.
She is participating in, and tied her comments to, the Feb. 14 One Billion Rising events, which raise awareness of the enormity of violence against women.
