Thief Accosts Junior High Student On Way Home

East Maine Elementary District 63 warns students to be cautious about displaying valuables, such as cell phones, in public.

Dr. Scott Clay, superintendent of East Maine Elementary District 63, issued the following statement. The student was walking home from Gemini Junior High School at Greenwood Avenue and Ballard Road in Niles. According to Niles Police, the incident was handled by Park Ridge police.

The statement reads:

"Recently, a young male approached one of our junior high students as he was walking home from school on the west bound side of Ballard and attempted to steal his cell phone.  The police have investigated and have not apprehended the suspect.

"Our student, fortunately, was not injured in any way. Please remind your children to be cautious when alone in public.  It is never a good idea for them to have belongings like cell phones, iPods, etc. visible to others on the street.

"The suspect was a male, white, 20's, 5'7", thin to average build, wearing a black baseball cap, blue jeans and a beige coat."
