VFW Post Pays Tribute On Memorial Day

A crowd gathered to pay their respects and thank veterans for their service.

A color guard and rifle salute to the sound of a single trumpet playing "Taps" set the tone for Monday's Memorial Day service in Niles.

Members of Niles VFW Post 7712, veterans, officials, military families and citizens came together at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Waterfall, at the southwest corner of Touhy and Milwaukee Avenues.

VFW members as well as city officials and members of local police and fire departments spoke, giving thanks to those who served their country and particularly those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"The greatest of all heroes are those who gave their lives in the service," said Mayor Robert M. Callero. "Their deeds will not be forgotten."

The service lasted for about 20 minutes and friends and family of veterans joined together for refreshments afterward.
