If you were one of hundreds who wandered through the Village Plaza shopping center last Thursday evening you may have thought you traveled back in time. Over 100 cars ranging from a Ford Model T to a 2011 Chevrolet Corvette were on display at the second classic car show that is sponsored by Kappy's Restaurant, Monday Night Car Shows and the Morton Grove Economic Development Commission. Spectators and participants didn't go hungry because Kappy's fired up their outdoor BBQ grill and served your choice of a hamburger, polish sausage or bratwurst with a bag of chips and a bottle of pop for the bargain price of $5. Even Miss Teen Illinois visited the show to admire the cars, most of which were manufactured before her parents were born. A magician and stilt walker entertained the kids while members of Morton Grove's police, fire and public works departments mingled with the crowd. Also seen at the show were Mayor Dan Staackmann and Village Trustees Bill Grear, John Thill, Maria Toth and Shel Marcus.
The next car show is scheduled for Thursday August 11 at 6:00 pm (rain date is the following Thursday). Note that a portion of the proceeds from the auction are donated to the Niles West and Niles North high school automobile mechanics training programs. If your business would like to be a show sponsor or donate a product or service for the auction please contact show manager Rick Glickman at (847) 433-2400 or email: rick@mondaynightcarshows.com

A lot of fun nostalgia at these shows, makes me feel young again. Are you planning any more Thursday antique auto drive-ins after August for this year or more in 2012?

Hi Dan,
I am glad you are enjoying the car shows. The next show is scheduled for Thursday August 11. Due to the popularity and positive feedback from show participants and spectators we are considering adding a fourth show on September 8 or 15. Based on the success of the events you can expect the shows to become permanent next year.

Looking forward to another old car show in September here in Morton Grove, please keep us informed about the date when you know it. Next year, would these events be just once a month or can they be helf more frequently?

Dan,
If an additional show is scheduled for September I will post the date here on Patch. The show's sponsors and organizers have discussed the possibility of making the show a weekly event but no definite decisions have been made yet. There will be some new activities added to the August 11 show that will be announced soon.

Thank you and I will be looking forward to the information. Anything you can do about Schulte and Sully so information like yours is not lost in their endless chatter?

Gotta say that I too am enjoying these car shows. That one last Thursday evening at Harrer Park, with a live rock and roll band and food from Mr. G's, was truly awesome. The period music really made the evening -- a stroke of pure genius! All that was missing was Richie Cunningham and the Fonz! Smokin'...!!!

This may be the last show of the season...unless we get some good news about an encore next month? Maybe next year we can make this a regular event for us all so we can get outside on a great day, visit with friends and neighbors and reminisce about when the old cars we see at the show were the ones we drove...I'm looking forward to it! Thanks Dave Lewis, Jeannine Witko and the MG Economic Development Commission for giving Morton Grove a new summer tradition to enjoy!
