Legislation to Ban Teen Tanning in Illinois Heads to Gov. Quinn

The bill, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), would prohibit all teens 17 and younger from using UV tanning beds.

Legislation to ban minors from indoor tanning beds was sent to Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday after being approved by the Illinois Senate. House Bill 188, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), would ban Illinois minors age 17 and younger from UV tanning beds. Currently, minors ages 14 to 17 are allowed to tan if they provide a parent's signature. Spray-on tanning is exempt from the legislation, as is phototherapy, which applies to situations where a physician supervises tanning when it is necessary to treat a medical condition. Radogno said in a press release that she sponsored the bill to protect Illinois minors from the serious health risks involved with indoor tanning beds. “Not only do children not realize …

Thank goodness Springfield has plenty of time to worry about things like teenagers in tanning booths, I guess they have all the pension and budget fiascos solved? The only thing more ridiculous is how proud these legislators are of themselves, as they send out press releases to show us what a good job they're doing. Sickening. (Someone better tell Quinn that part of Obamacare funding comes from a…   more ›

Niles Liquor Commissioner Could Get $150-220 Per Hour

But the person won't be drenched in income, Niles trustees learned when they met Monday to decide on pay and terms for the new liquor commissioner they must hire because Mayor Przybylo is barred from the role. Here's why.

As Niles trustees held a special meeting Monday to set guidelines for hiring a liquor commissioner, Village Attorney Joseph Annunzio mentioned several attorneys chatted him up at a party recently. He realized they were hoping to get work from the village of Niles as its new liquor commissioner. However, after trustees discussed the pay for the job, such attorneys might not even want to buy a round of drinks. Annunzio told trustees the going rate for a qualified attorney with municipal experience would range from $150 to $220 per hour. Then he added there would likely be only two to five hours' worth of work most months. Earlier: Mayors generally serve as liquor commissioner; however, Przybylo is barred by law from doing so, and Niles …

Niles Considers Liquor Commissioner; Meeting Today

The fact new Mayor Przybylo holds a liquor license requires trustees to enforce a new law that says someone else (other than the mayor) must hold the title of liquor commissioner. Some want to be thorough in approaching this.

When three new Niles trustees took office Tuesday, May 13, they immediately had to consider how to put into effect a new Illinois law--which had made it possible for new Mayor Andrew Przybylo to run for mayor. Because it brought up some touchy issues, the discussion got a little heated. The board wlll meet again tonight, May 20, to discuss the issue further. Up until recently, Przybylo would have been barred from running for mayor due to a Prohibition-era law which prevented liquor license holders, of which Przybylo is one, from also being mayors. However, three local Illinois House representatives, who represent Niles and areas nearby, succeeded in passing a law a few months ago that would enable liquor license holders to run for mayor…

Medical Marijuana Bill Passed by Illinois Senate; Quinn Last Hurdle

Passed by a 35-21 vote, the bill now goes to the desk of Gov. Pat Quinn, who has not yet said whether he intends to sign it.

By a vote of 35-21, the Illinois Senate approved legislation on Friday that would allow doctors in the state to prescribe marijuana as pain relief for severe medical conditions. The bill now goes to Gov. Pat Quinn for his signature. According to the Chicago Tribune, the bill covers 33 specific conditions—including multiple sclerosis, cancer and HIV infection—and includes several controls, with a four-year trial program, dosage limits, fingerprinting, background checks and licensed dispensing centers. “This bill is filled with walls to keep this limited,” the paper quoted sponsoring Sen. Bill Haine (D-Alton), who urged lawmakers to pass the legislation as a compassionate measure for those suffering with extreme pain. In opposition, Sen. …

Niles Parks Seek New Commissioner

Interested in serving on the Niles Park District board? Commissioner Elaine Heinen will step down because she has moved out of the district. It is accepting resumes from interested applicants and will appoint a new commissioner.

If you have a desire to serve on the Niles Park District board, the district has an opening. The park district is accepting resumes and cover letters from interested applicants, because longtime commissioner Elaine Heinen will be stepping down at the June 18 meeting, said Joe LoVerde, the district's executive director.  Heinen, who has been experiencing health challenges recently, park district president Ray Czarnik said previously, has moved to a residential facility in Arlington Heights, LoVerde said. Earlier: Niles Park District appoints Genualdi If the timing works out, board members may appoint the new commissioner at the June 18 meeting, at which Heinen's service will be recognized, LoVerde said. DiMaria, 3 Trustees Take Office in Morton Grove

Dan DiMaria was sworn in as Mayor Monday, Bill Grear, Tony Kalogerakos and John Pietron were sworn in as trustees and Ed Ramos was sworn in as village clerk in Morton Grove.

Ten minutes before the Morton Grove village board meeting--and swearing-in of a new mayor and trustees--began Monday at 7 p.m., all seats were filled and people were competing for standing room. There were boutonnieres, plaques, dignitaries, a judge in black robes, celebratory speeches and much applause. It had all the excitement of a presidential inauguration; the only thing missing was Beyonce lip-synching the National Anthem. The evening began with outgoing Mayor Dan Staackmann opening the meeting as usual; during the trustee reports, many of the trustees, and others, saluted Staackmann and outgoing Trustee Larry Gomberg. Earlier: Staackmann, Gomberg honored Trustees adjourned that meeting, and Judge Jordan Kaplan, a retired Cook …
