CJE SeniorLife’s Consumer Assistance Department Offers Free Information, Referrals, Advocacy for Older Adults

CJE SeniorLife’s Consumer Assistance (CA) department provides free information, referral and advocacy for adults who are age 60 or over and seeking resources to support independent living. Consumer Assistance helps older adults and their caregivers identify government benefits and community resources that help them remain stable and in the community. Whether someone is just retiring, or is retired but needs additional support or advocacy, CA staff is available to help.

Consumer Assistance Resource Specialists are trained and certified Senior Health Insurance Program counselors who help seniors navigate the various Medicare and other health insurance systems to receive insurance and other services to support their medical needs. Open enrollment for Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage programs will begin October 15 and end December 7. Starting October 1, CJE’s Consumer Assistance staff will be available to assist persons age 64 and under with applications for the new Marketplace health insurance. It is important for consumers to review their prescription drug plans yearly to make sure they are getting the best value and their plan meets their prescription needs. CA staff is available to help with insurance plan comparisons at no cost.

CJE SeniorLife’s Consumer Assistance department can help ease many of the problems that older adults may encounter as they transition to or during retirement. Resource Center associates provide help with a range of government programs, including Aid for the Aged, Blind and Disabled [AABD]; Social Security and Supplemental Security Income [SSI]; Food Stamp Program [SNAP]; Housing Resources (subsidized housing, assisted living, nursing care); Benefits Access Application license plate discounts; Health Insurance (Medicare; Medicaid); Transportation (RTA Reduced Fare Program, CTA Special Taxi Access); and Medicare Part D for prescription drug plans and health insurance guidance through SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program).
