Maine Township Garage Sale Raises Much Needed Funds

Blessed with great weather and a record turnout of 80 vendors, the 2013 Community Garage Sale hosted by Maine Township raised $4,224. Net proceeds will be divided into $3,093 for the summer camp for disadvantaged children and $1,031 to buy food to stock up the Township's very active food pantry operation.

"We have held a number of these garage sales and each year it is so gratifying to see how well people respond," says Carol Teschky, Maine Township Supervisor. "From the generous sponsors to the dozens and dozens of individual vendors, we are grateful for the support. Even our friends at the various fire departments, city governments, and park districts help spread the word which results in a strong turnout."

She added that this year's estimate put the turnout at a record number of over 1600 shoppers and a record number of vendors at 83.

The event is organized by the MaineStay Department of Maine Township and sponsored by Chicagoland Senior News, Journal & Topics Newspapers, Highway Commissioner Robert Provenzano, International Bank, Parkway Bank, and Republic Services (ARC). Other in-kind sponsors include Costco, Gordon Food Services, and the Jewel Food stores at Oakton and Milwaukee and Dempster and Greenwood.

Teschky notes that the MaineStay Adventure Camp for disadvantaged youth provides qualified families a chance to give their children an opportunity to experience a day camp filled with many educational, cultural, recreational and fun filled outings. It began in 2004 and has served an estimated 350 children over the years.

The camp is designed to provide a safe and structured environment which allows the children to improve their social skills and be exposed to new things, she adds. Next summer will be the 10th anniversary of the camp program.
