50-Foot "Indian Marker Tree" Gets Significant Trim

The historic tree was deemed a safety hazard.

A 150-year-old oak tree that Native Americans once used as a directional guide has been dramatically trimmed, the Morton Grove Champion reports.

The tree, known as the Indian Marker Tree, is now 12 feet tall. Public Works crews cut off the crow on July 19 after it was deemed a safety hazard, the Champion reports. The tree sits at the northeast corner of Beckwith Road and Nashville Avenue

Andy DeMonte, director of public works, told the Champion that the remaining trunk will stand, “for a while until we figure out what to do with it. ... The Historical Museum wants to preserve part of it.”
