Cooking Up The Big Greek Food Fest

On Thursday morning, the parking lot at St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church was bare. But by early evening, huge tents, banners, signs and a kiddie play area were set up, all in preparation for the Big Greek Food Fest of Niles, opening Friday at 5 pm.

Volunteers Anna Demos and Kathy Apithis said many Greek families opt to have appetizers from the taverna and roast lamb, which is sliced and weighed by the pound. Those in a hungrier mood will head for the food tent, which will feature souvlaki (shish-kabob), moussaka, pastitsio, dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) and spanakopita (spinach pie).

Amid all the gastronomic adventures, they urged guests to save room for the dessert tent, featuring baklava, loulkoumathes (fried honey puffs) diples and more.

The festival runs Friday through Sunday at the church, 7373 Caldwell Avenue, Niles.
