The Importance Of Attention

I love watching families on the train. A father, son around age 6, daughter approx. age 8 were on the train this morning. I watched as the kids, with great anticipation, were starring out the window talking about how fun Chicago was going to be today. I also watched as the dad starred at the IPhone in his hand for about 40 solid minutes. I kept thinking as I watched the little boy continue to point out things outside the window to his dad only to see his dad nod while never looking up...I so wanted to see the dad put the phone away, just look up, look into the excited eyes of his kids and listen.

Hone Your Holiday Activities to Their Finest Points

For me, the holiday season starts in mid-October and continues through the first week of January. When I was a kid it seemed like whole years passed between Halloween and Thanksgiving. But in more recent years the 4th quarter feels like one giant megalopolis of holidays. I think of it as Hankmas, which includes Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years....So we started paring down our holiday preparations and appearances and enjoying the moment more.

Pension reform, tax cuts don't go hand-in-hand

Senate President John Cullerton has taken a lot of heat this week for stating in a radio interview that the state's pensions crisis isn't really a crisis. But lost in the dust-up over the semantics of the word "crisis" was Cullerton's assertion that the pension reform effort is all about cutting taxes in 2015...I beg to differ in my blog post. In 1996, Illinois spent 3.6 percent of its state-generated, General Fund revenue on pension payments. This year, it's 24.3 percent. And headed upward. That's no way to prioritize government spending.

Polish Delis Delight (Me)

I love the Polish delis in the area, and regularly shop at two: the Rosmart Deli at 128 Eastgate Court in Algonquin (same center as Nero's Pizza), and Ania's Polish Deli in Lake Zurich...Ania's is a might bigger, but both have great meat counters and breads - I like the rye loafs that come from Chris' Bakery in Chicago; both places also have an assortment of locally baked French breads.
