Get Out: Pools, Parades, Bike the Drive, Retro Rock

Plan some fun in your downtime. It's a holiday weekend!



Where/When: Irish American Heritage Center, 4626 N. Knox, Chicago, Friday May 27 at 7:30 p.m.
Why Go: Lots and lots of Irish dance and entertainment.
Pricing: $25 IAHC members, $30 general public.

Outdoor Pools Open
Where/When: Park Ridge Park District’s Centennial Pool, 100 S. Western, Park Ridge, 6 a.m. Saturday May 28.
Why Go: Outdoor pools! Woo hoo! Now if the weather would just cooperate.
Pricing: $6 admission.

Rick Lindy and The Wild Ones Retro Rock
Where/When: Chambers Seafood Grille and Chop House, 6881 N. Milwaukee Ave., Niles, Sat. May 28 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Why Go: Did Johnny Cash sound this good?
Pricing: Buy drinks.

Memorial Day Parade
Where/When: From Talcott and Cumberland north to Park Ridge’s Uptown, Monday May 30 at 9:30 a.m.
Why Go: It’s a parade with a real hometown feel to it, and you can stock up on Tootsie Rolls until Halloween.
Pricing: Free; bring your camp chair.

Rock Cut State Park Camp Out For Ages 8–14
When/Where: 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Friday, May 27 - Saturday, May 28 Administrative & Leisure Center, 2222 Birch St. in Des Plaines
Why Go:  First time and experienced campers are invited for an overnight campout at Rock Cut State Park. Roast marshmallows over an open campfire, enjoy meals cooked outdoors, and participate in a variety of recreational outdoor activities.
Pricing: R: $78/NR: $98


When/Where: , 767 W Golf Rd, Des Plaines Saturday, May 28 2 p.m.–5 p.m.
Why Go: Sample wines from Kilikanoon, Catena, Dog Point and other producers from Australia, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa.
Pricing: $5-$10

Retro Zombie Tiki Terror 3  
When/Where: , 1591 Lee St, Des Plaines Sunday, May 29 5 p.m.–2 a.m.
Why Go: The annual party includes a zombie costume contest, zombie beauty pageant, raffles, prizes and Polynesian performances.
Pricing: $20-$25


Memorial Day Parade
When/Where:  Meet at St. Joseph School on Lake Avenue and Ridge Road at 10 a.m. on Monday May 30. The parade will go to Wilmette’s Village Hall, 1200 Wilmette Avenue.
Why Go: The event is hosted by the Huerter Post #46 of the American Legion and a surefire way to honor soldiers while hoping to kick off summer.
Pricing: Free

Bike the Drive
When/Where: Lake Shore Drive, Sunday May 29
Why Go: It’s the one day out of the year when the length of Lake Shore Drive is closed and bicycles own the road.
Pricing: $15 to $63, Registration ends May 27 at 12 a.m.
