Get Out! Your Weekend Planner

This weekend is full of free activities including an ice cream social, outdoor movies and dance lessons.

Party in the Park/Ice Cream Social
When/Where: 6-7:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 11, Mansfield Park, 5830 Church St., Morton Grove
Why Go: There are few things better than ice cream on a hot summer day. Bring the family for a free cone, games and a treasure hunt.
Price: Free

Classic Car Show
When/Where: 6-9 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 11, Kappy’s Restaurant and Pancake House, 7200 Dempster St., Morton Grove
Why Go: While you’re scoping out the sweet rides in the diner’s parking lot, the kids will be entertained by a clown, magician and other activities. This is the last Morton Grove show of the summer so don’t miss it.

Wizard World Chicago Comic Con
When/Where: Thursday, Aug. 11- Sunday, Aug. 14. Hours vary, click on the link above to find which time works best for you. Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, 5555 N. River Road in Rosemont.
Why Go: OMG! The line-up is awesome! Come on out and see some old and new favorites like Anthony Michael Hall, Mimi Rogers, Bruce Campbell, Patrick Stewart, Billy Corgan, Peter Tork and many, many more.

When/Where: Saturday, Aug. 13 1378 Miner St. in Des Plaines 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Why Go: Nothing is more important than keeping your child safe. Come by and receive a a safety seat inspection, have your child fingerprinted and receive two child identification cards all for free. It’s worth it.

Back To School Night
When/Where: At Pioneer Park on Friday, August 12 from 4 to 9 p.m.
Why Go: Celebrate going back to school with games and chances to win school supplies.
Pricing: $5 per child

Concert In The Park
When/Where: Friday, August 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 at Oak Park in Niles.
Why Go: Spend an evening hanging out in the park with The Juke Box Band.
Pricing: Free

Making Digital Comics with Digital Life
When/Where: Wilmette Public Library, Aug. 11 from 3 p.m.  to 4:30 p.m.
Why Go: Ever wanted to experiment with turning your dreams into a comic strip? Bring your own thumb drive and learn how to use Comic Life software. The class is for grades 5 to 9.
Price: Free, Registration Required


When/Where: 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14;, County Line Rd & Green Bay Rd, Highland Park
Why Go: Acclaimed singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright performs alongside the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for the first half of the show, then returns for a second half with the songs fans have come to know him for.
Pricing: $25-50


When/Where: 3-4:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 13; Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel,, 555 N. Sheridan Rd., Lake Forest
Why Go: Internationally trained classical guitarist Adam del Monte is known for his creative compositions that combine elements of flamenco, tango, Sephardic and Moorish chants and contemporary Brazilian jazz.

Why Go: Make friends and learn to play golf from with on-course coaching from the Northbrook Golf Academy and Girls Golf Team. All levels welcome; ages 5-16.

56th Annual Ginza Holiday @ Midwest Buddhist Temple

Why Go: Consume a myriad of Japanese cuisines and watch live, artful presentations of Aikido, Judo, as well as Karate. Several master craftsman are being flown in from Japan for the celebration.
Price: $6 for adults, $5 for students, $5 for senior citizens and children under 12 years of age get in free

Why Go: It’s a Cajun dance class with pro dance instructor Dennis Stroughmatt and his band at the garden. Refreshments,including beer and margaritas, will be available.

Why Go: It's a story of century-old adventure that you can catch as the Disney movie Tangled for free on Wyman Green, as part of the "Movies on the Green Series." In case the weather turns sour, the movie will continue in the village hall council chamber on the third floor.
