Why Go: Everyone is invited to play in the new ADA accessible play area with two grade appropriate structures. The park also features an 18 ft. picnic shelter, a sand play area, new seating areas and a new half-court basketball court.

When/Where: Saturday, Aug. 27, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m., Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood Ave. in Des Plaines.

Why Go: Terra Brockman, a fierce advocate for sustainable agriculture will share stories about unique tomato varieties that have been passed down over generations. A tasting of heirloom tomatoes will follow the presentation.

When/Where: Sunday, Aug. 28, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., participants will leave from Lake Park Clubhouse, 1015 Howard Ave. in Des Plaines.

Why Go: Trip includes: Nature Sanctuary, boat cruise and lunch. Hawthorn Hollow in Kenosha County, Wisconsin includes restored prairie, perennial gardens, a butterfly garden and a dwarf conifer collection. Enjoy a walk through the gardens and two miles of nature trails that wind through the woods of the Pike River Valley. Then, it’s all aboard the Brew City Queen for a lunch cruise down the Milwaukee River and onto Lake Michigan.

1st Annual 10th Legislative District Community Resource Fair

When/Where: Dunham Park, 4638 N. Melvina Chicago, Saturday Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m.

Why Go: Anyone can attend the fair, hosted by state Senator John Mulroe, and visit booths providing information about driver’s licenses, fire prevention, child seat safety, forest preserves and other government resources. Also, get a free blood pressure screening, refreshments, and entertainment.

Welcome Reception For New Pastor

When/Where: St. John Brebeuf Church; 8307 N Harlem Ave, Niles; after the 5:00 o’clock mass on Saturday, August 27.

Why Go: Welcome the new pastor, Father Meany, to St. John Brebeuf Parish with a reception in his honor.

Wildwood Nature Center Anniversary Celebration

When/Where: Wildwood Nature Center; 2701 W Sibley St, Park Ridge; from 10 a.m. till 12 p.m.

Why Go: Celebrate 25 years with the Wildwood Nature Center with a campfire, bounce house, animal feedings, a scavenger hunt and more.

A History Of Niles

When/Where: At the Niles Historical Center; 8970 N Milwaukee, Niles; from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28.

Why Go: Hear guest speaker, Officer Tom Ferraro give a detailed history of Niles from 1832 to 1950. Refreshments will be served after the program.

When/Where: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26; 

Why Go: Watch the Spartans take on Hersey in the first football game of the season, at home at Glenbrook North. Although two-year starter QB has graduated, Glenbrook North’s lineup still looks good, including junior RB Grant Rushing, .

Why Go: Enjoy brunch or dinner at Prairie Grass Café and raise money for a new organic garden and outdoor classroom for District 28.

Pricing: 10 percent of proceeds from any meal go to support the district.

Why Go: Reward completion of the first homework assignments of the year with actor Jack Black and some animated panda kung fu.

Why Go: Event organizers say the car dealership will be transformed into a Caribbean resort complete with casino games, music, prizes and food catered by Wolfgang Puck. Proceeds support the North Suburban YMCA’s Capital Campaign.

Anime Club: Animeniacs

When/Where: Wilmette Public Library, Aug. 27 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: Join some great trivia contests, learn some drawing techniques, as well as ComicLife software. Make your cartoon dreams a reality!

American Craft Exposition 2011
When/Where:
Aug. 26 to 28, Henry Crown Sports Pavilion at Northwestern University, 2311 Campus Drive, Evanston
Why Go:
End the summer by sampling some of the United States’ top crafters. Find the perfect items to add the finishing touches to your home. A portion of the proceeds go to NorthShore’s research on Ovarian cancer.
