Impact of Immigrant Population to be Studied for Urban Planning

Submitted by Brenda Metelka and Susan McGowan, employees at MGPL.

Recently released U.S. Census figures show that Morton Grove is one of the most culturally diverse towns in Illinois with the village's 6,000+ Asian-Americans forming its fastest growing ethnic group. The village now can claim the largest percentage for this group of any of the surrounding suburbs.

Having such a diverse population presents challenges in the form of languages and cultural barriers.

Janet Smith, vo-director of the Voorhees Center at the University of Illinois, Chicago, will present the findings of a recent census study done for the Interfaith Housing Association.

"Open to All? Different Cultures, Same Communities: A Look at Immigrants and Housing in Chicago's Northern Suburbs," shows the impact of the changing population on housing and living in Morton Grove.

The public is invited to attend the presentation at the Morton Grove Public Library on Wed, May 4, 2011, at 7 pm, in the Baxter Auditorium.

The library is also celebrating the culture and contributions of Morton Grove's Asian Americans with "The Asian American Experience," a list of the Library's notable books, in fiction and nonfiction, on the experience of immigrants to the US from Asia.
