Moms Talk: How Much To Spend on Other Kids' Presents?

When your child gets invited to a birthday party, how much should you spend on gifts for the birthday boy or girl? 

Most families in this area have parties either at home or at the Niles Park District, Brunswick Bowling, Laser Zone, Paint N' Party, Niles Family Fitness or something similar. But if your child gets invited to a party where it's obvious the parents are spending a lot--for example, taking kids to Medieval Times or a big downtown musical--do you give a more expensive present?

In other words, what's your thinking behind how much is appropriate to spend?

Also, how much research do you do on the birthday child's likes and dislikes before choosing a gift? Have you ever called the birthday child's mom and asked if Katie likes crafts or whether Justin could use a soccer ball?
