"Freedom: A Novel" by Jonathan Franzen (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, $28): White calls the novel a "perfect snapshot of the times right now," this lengthy novel about American contemporary life offers a long narrative.
"Lord of Misrule" by Jaimy Gordon (McPherson, $25): This National Bok Award Winner was considered an underdog for the book awards, but has come out on top. It follows a young woman who works at a horse racing track, and "captures rural culture very well."

"West of Here" by Jonathan Evison (Algonquin Books, $24.95): Described as an "epic" novel, the fictional novel tells the story of the Pacific Northwest distilled through time and history.
"The Fates Will Find Their Way: A Novel" by Hannah Pittard (Ecco, $22.99): Written by a Chicago author, the novel tells the story of a girl who mysteriously disappears, told through the vantage points of her peers. White said that fans of William Faulkner may relish in the third-person storytelling and cultural commentary.
