Reader Response: How Has 9/11 Affected You?

One local recalls the events that changed our nation.

Today we remember the events of Sept. 11, events that undoubtedly changed our nation and world. We asked readers to share some of their stories and experiences of that day, 10 years after the worst terrorist attack against the United States.

Here is one resident's recollection of Sept. 11:

Morton Grove resident John Ruberry - "I left my home on Lincoln Avenue in Morton Grove for a short run that Tuesday after a 20 mile run on Sunday in preparation for the Chicago Marathon. The air was still, there was not a cloud in the sky on that balmy day---we had the same weather here that New Yorkers and Washingtonians did on 9/11. WXRT news informed me of the attacks--I was running with a Walkman--just before I turned around at Lehigh.

I left for work late--I was watching the television news reports of the tragedy--but amazingly I made it to my office in Park Ridge relatively early. It didn't occur to me until later that many people--maybe most--decided to skip work or school.

I didn't get much work done on 9/11. My co-workers and I were glued to the TV, while we gazed nervously west in the direction of O'Hare Airport. A few years earlier a planned terror attack at Los Angeles International Airport was foiled.

Would O'Hare be hit? New York...Washington...then Chicago?

On my way home that evening I stopped by a bakery to order a birthday cake for my daughter. Despite the carnage of that horrible day, I knew we still had to have a birthday party for her. I thought about the people of London during the blitz of 1940. Birthdays didn't stop then either."
