Seven Weeks to Morton Grove Farmers' Market: Local Ways to Love Your Mother!

This week Farmers' Market Manager Kristina Otte gives us the scoop on the new vendors for the first-ever Mother's Day Sale.

Though our Market doesn’t start until June 4 (officially and with much fanfare), we are excited to host our first-ever Mother’s Day Sale on Saturday, May 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at our regular location, 8930 Waukegan Rd. This market will be a preview of the new season’s vendors as well as a place to find an array of gifts for those women in our lives who are so deserving of our gratitude.

Even though it’s early and seeds have barely been planted in our Morton Grove gardens, most of our farmers have hoop houses and green houses where they start their crops early. When we visited Randy Book of Providence Farm two weeks ago, we were witnesses to herbs and veggies already sprouting out of the dirt, thanks to Randy starting his seedlings in the sunroom off their kitchen weeks ago.

Aside from herbs, asparagus, lettuces and other early-spring produce, you’ll find salsas, meats, eggs, cheeses, baked goods aplenty, coffee, honey-nut snacks, honeys and beeswax candles, gourmet olive oils, alpaca wool products and yarn, and yummy chocolate-dipped snacks.

But also at this special sale, you’ll find a wonderful selection of gifts to choose from:

Luminaire Body Care, run by Chris Moore of Morton Grove, has created his own naturally derived products for body care, all vegan.

Jennifer Calin is a Morton Grove native and a nature photographer, and she’ll be selling her notecards with photos of local nature, so you can express your deep love and gratitude by writing an actual hand-written note to the women in your life.

Terra Nostra Jewelry, created by Corina Andronache of Morton Grove, will also be on hand. Corina will showcase her exquisite pieces of wearable art at affordable prices, already very popular in the area.

Global Handmade Hope in Park Ridge will sell handmade items from around the world, fairly traded. This means that the people who actually make the handcrafts and gifts are paid a decent wage for their work. You get a beautiful gift, they get a livelihood.

Le Flour Bakery, our new baker from Edison Park, will bring their scrumptious baked goods and jams that they’ll have each week, and they will also bring gift baskets, only on this unique day.

So this Mother’s Day weekend, worry not that you’ve forgotten the Moms in your life; stop in on Saturday, May 7, between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., and find the perfect gifts, yummy treats and good quality, early-spring produce, freshly picked hours earlier. Make your mother the perfect omelets with local cheeses and fresh herbs on Sunday morning, plan a stir-fry with natural meats or delicious veggies, or grill some burgers or brats, and enjoy a relaxing day with family and friends. Happy Mother’s Day to all the women in our lives, whether they are “official” mothers or not!
