Showing Puppy Love on Valentine's Day

We love our pets and they shower us with affection as well. How can we give them something special this Valentine's Day?

You walk in the door after a long day and the first thing you get is a tail wagging, a fluffy nudge with a loud purr or a little tweet from the cage. No matter what type of pet you have at home, there is an affection there that grows from the time they enter the door and over the years.

Those that do not know what that is like sometimes ask, "Why do you do all that work for the dog, cat, etc.?" The answer is the unconditional love that these creatures give.

No matter how bad a day I have or how stinky my morning breath, my dog always greets me with a nudge of his cold nose and the hopes that I will pat his head and the promise that he will listen to whatever is on my mind. I sometimes catch my kids whispering in the littlest dog's ear, telling her something that is only meant for the two of them to know. And I often hear my husband's laughter around the house after one of the goofy wheatens have pulled another trick.

They lift us up and fill our hearts with love. So as we approach Valentine's Day it's time to give back to these furry, feathered or scaly creatures that have wormed their ways into our homes and our hearts.

Here are a few ideas on how you can treat your Sweetie Pie, Pumpkin, Cookie, Honey, or whatever you call your pets.

Dog Treats

Give your dog a special treat of plain organic yogurt. It can help your pet's digestion as well as make its tail wag.  I like to spread a teaspoon of yogurt along the sides of a dish so the dogs can lick it and make the treat last longer. You can also put a dollop on top of their Kibbles or let them lick it straight from the spoon.

Take Fido for a walk. The cold snap has finally ended and we are getting back to bearable temperatures. The walk will make everyone a little happier. And why not get your pup a new sweater or coat for the holiday? Paws Pet Place on Golf in Morton Grove has an adorable selection of outwear for any size dog.

Cat Treats

A little spoonful of tuna from the can or a favorite cat snack is always appreciated and sure to get you a lovely symphony of purrs. Pet Supplies Plus on Dempster in Morton Grove has a large selection of cat treats, including organic. Remember, milk is not a treat for cats, they cannot digest it and will not make for a happy tummy.

Get out your old or buy a new cat dancing toy, something with a handle and a wiggling piece of material on the other end. Even a simple thing, like the plastic ring around the top of your milk bottle can entertain your beloved kitty for hours.

Feathered, Other Friends Treats

Do you have a furry friend that spends most of its time in a cage? Take it out and let the pet run or fly around in a safe area of your house. For hamsters and smaller animals, you should try an exercise ball. It is fun for the kids (and us too) to watch the little balls of fur roll around while they get their exercise. They will love you for this!

For a tasty treat this Valentine's Day, you can give your small friend a baby carrot. Just one, so it doesn't upset the animal's stomach, but it will make your pet come back for more attention from you.

No matter what you buy or give your pet this Valentine's Day, the only thing it really needs is the gift of your time. Take some and spend it with your pet, which is always there for you.
