Six Weeks to Morton Grove Farmers' Market: Why Do You Support Farmers’ Markets?

This week Farmers' Market Manager Kristina Otte shares some thoughts on the importance of farmers' markets in communities.

Some of you may be regulars at the Morton Grove Farmers’ Market. Others may wonder why you should shop at a Farmers’ Market when you could just stop at the local grocery store.

What’s so great about a Farmers’ Market?

Lots of things, such as freshly-picked produce, live music, a sense of community with our neighbors…(and I’d like to hear from you on this one, so please comment below…) but here’s one perspective, in light of our recent Earth Day celebrations.

Wanting to keep the Earth Day spirit vital in our everyday lives, we can look at how important it is eat food that is grown without harmful chemicals, for the good of ourselves, our children and the Earth, but we should also think about the farmers who are producing our food.

We want them to have a good life too, safe for their families. Our Market committee recently visited Randy and Elaine Book, new farmers at our Market, and saw how their kids help out so much with the farm.

They deserve to provide a good living for their family and to surround their kids with a healthy, safe environment at home.

They refuse to pollute their farm and their family with harmful pesticides.

Bravo to them and lucky for us! Where we buy our food is a big choice and I believe that we have to think about where our food comes from, how it’s raised, and who produces it for us.

Now it’s your turn: What do you think are the benefits of a Farmers’ Market?
