General Weather Discussion for the Week Ahead - A Traffic Jam

It seems like the same old weather pattern is locked in place with a frontal boundary providing the focus for shower and t-storm development over the next several days.

Think of it as a traffic jam in the upper atmosphere where the pattern is just stuck in place due to blocking features to our north, east and west. Any t-storm cluster that forms typically tracks around a heat dome and ends up in our neck of the woods with storm clusters rotating southeast toward the Ohio Valley.

While timing these t-storm clusters can be difficult, the weekend will not be a total wash-out. Much of Friday, for example, looks decent with the best the best chance of rain staying to our south over central and western Illinois.

Some of this activity though may drift northeast into our region later today or tonight. A few rounds of showers and t-storms can be expected though this weekend with many dry hours in between.

Perhaps the best chance of storms over the weekend will be focused during the morning hours of Saturday with heavy downpours and again by late Saturday into early Sunday.

As the front continues its journey to the north, temperatures will begin to warm up, beginning on Father’s Day where you may notice an increase in heat and humidity.

Temperatures in the 80s look likely through early next week with 90s most likely staying to our south. This is due to frequent rain chances and cloud cover keeping our temperatures down (closer to  normal).

The front will continue to waver back and forth with a continued threat of storms from late Monday through Wednesday with perhaps some strong to severe t-storms at times until the front passes through which would be sometime on Wednesday.

This general pattern will be locked in place and should be the dominant pattern through the rest of the month. Additional rain chances will likely return either by the end of next week or by next weekend.
