Weather Week in Review: April 15 to April 22 in Morton Grove

Snow, rain and sunshine made it into this week's weather round-up.

Blustery and cool conditions continued through much of the period, with several more storm systems passing through Morton Grove.

One strong storm in particular brought numerous rain showers on Friday, April 15 with showers moving in about 2 p.m. Occasional waves of rain and even a few thunderstorms continued into Saturday morning with most areas picking up around a half inch of rain across northern Cook County.

Temperatures averaged well below normal with the mercury staying in the 40s and gusty winds off the lake to 35 mph at times. Even colder air moved in on Saturday, April 16 with temperatures falling into the mid and upper 30s by mid to late afternoon producing wind chills in the 20s.

There were even a few snowflakes that were observed for a brief period of time on the backside of the storm. As skies cleared on Sunday, April 17, temperatures dipped as low as 34 and rebounded back into the low to mid 50s by late Sunday afternoon with a fair amount of sunshine.

A late and nasty April Fools joke from Mother Nature materialized when wet snow greeted us on Monday, April 18. Moderate snow fell between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. Although not entirely unusual for this time of year, there were a few reasons why snow fell.

  • A warm front produced a heavier band of precipitation, which moved into our area during the overnight hours.
  • As precipitation fell, this mixed down colder air from aloft, a process know as evaporative cooling. This process caused temperatures to fall to 32 which allowed snowflakes to the reach the surface.
  • Snow amounts were close to a half to three quarters of an inch and much of the snow accumulated on grassy and elevated surfaces.
  • Temperatures stayed in the mid 30s through the day with cold temperatures continuing on Tuesday, April 19 with highs only in the mid to upper 30s.

The next storm in the series brought more rain to the Morton Grove area on Tuesday with a few waves of moderate to heavy rain producing around a half inch. Rain tapered off during the afternoon with mainly cloudy skies and temperatures staying right around 35 with wind chill values in the 20s. As a wave of low pressure tracked south of the region by Tuesday evening, a line of severe thunderstorms formed with the heaviest storms staying south of the local area.

Showers and storms were heavy for a time though between 6pm and 10pm with storms producing small hail, gusty winds, vivid lightning and heavy downpours. An additional half inch fell bringing totals to around one inch for the day. The active pattern continued with yet another storm bringing more rain to the region late Thursday night with rain continuing on and off into Friday.

Morton Grove was certainly an honorary member of the bad weather club this week. Active weather will probably continue into May with above average rain and a better chance of severe weather.
