General Weather Discussion for the Week Ahead

High pressure in control brings an awesome Friday to much of the Midwest with generous amounts of sunshine and temperatures climbing into the 60s. While a good percentage of the weekend will be rain-free, a cool front approaching from the west will bring our next chance of showers and perhaps a few t-storms to the area by Saturday night and early Sunday. These will be hit and miss and not everyone will see them. As the front pushes to the south on Sunday, May 1, a few showers are possible in the afternoon and evening to our south over downstate Illinois. Drier air moving into our region should suppress the rain to our south and southeast.

Better weather will start off the beginning of May with more of a zonal flow setting up or a west to east jet-stream configuration. This means storm systems are progressive, more spaced out and there is less moisture to work with which means less rain and more time to get out and enjoy. Temperatures will also warm up nicely between May 3 and May 6, with high temps in the 60s and lows in the mid 40s. A fast-moving front may produce a few showers and thunderstorms late on Thursday, May 5 with possibly a few lingering sprinkles or light showers early on Friday, May 6.

Overall, no big storm systems are expected and the risk of severe weather will be low. It should be noted that the most active months for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in the Chicago area are May and the beginning of June, so now is the time to review severe weather safety rules.
