General Weather Discussion for the Week Ahead

Another unsettled period of weather is expected with hit-and-miss showers and t-storms returning to much of the Upper Midwest, especially by this weekend and continuing through the middle of next week.

A low pressure system and a frontal boundary is the reason for the inclement weather, which will only move slowly over the Midwest for the next several days. Blame it on a blocking pattern in the upper atmosphere, where low pressure systems are trapped between two branches of the jet-stream and have no where to go. So they just meander about for several days. This has been the dominant weather pattern so far this spring and one reason why the weather has been so cool and unsettled.

The difference with this weather system though is that as upper-level winds shift southwest, temperatures will be allowed to warm up significantly with highs in the upper 70s to mid 80s through Tuesday with temperatures possibly cooling off by the middle of the week as winds shift to the northeast.

It is possible that some of the thunderstorms moving through the region next week may produce severe weather with gusty winds, hail and heavy rain.

There are signs that pattern may quiet down near May 27, as high pressure builds from the northwest. This will send the best chances of rain toward the Ohio Valley region and we may clear out for at least a few days.

Weather Fact: The percent of possible sunshine during the month of May is 58 percent.
