Allie Hamilton and Noah Calhoun meet at a carnival but are separated by Allie's parents who disapprove of Noah's family. Allie and her family move away and Allie does not hear from Noah for several years. She becomes engaged to a handsome young soldier named Lon, but when she stops by Noah's home to check on him, finds that their reunion has rekindled a passionate romance.
