The Tales of Hoffmann

Katydid Productions presents Jacques Offenbach’s “The Tales of Hoffmann” at the Mary Wilson House Beyer Auditorium in Park Ridge, Illinois, June 1,2,8,9,15
and 16.

Join us for this musical fantasy woven around the poet
Hoffmann and his Muse while he battles his demons and recounts the three great loves and losses of his life:  Olympia, the living doll; Antonia, the aspiring singer with a fatal flaw, and Giulietta, the courtesan who seduces him and ultimately betrays him.  All three ladies, consciously or
unconsciously, in the service of Hoffmann’s great enemy, who mercilessly uses them to destroy Hoffmann.  Lightened by a supporting cast of rowdy students, cranky bartender, mad scientist, silly manservant, gambler and a very manly woman, this tragicomedy is a musical feast
for the ears and a delight for the eyes.

In French, with projected titles in English, even
“non-opera-goers” will find much that is familiar to the ear, from the "villain" themes that have been echoed and imitated by Hollywood over and over again, to the barcarolle in Act IV, to the romantic and overwhelming
love duets in Acts III and IV.
