The History Singers Pay Tribute to the Songs of the Civil War at MGPL

Submitted by Brenda Metelka, MGPL Programming Department

April marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War and to commemorate the occasion, the Morton Grove Public Library hosted "Songs of the Civil War," a patriotic concert performed by The History Singers.

Earlier this month on a Sunday afternoon, John and Kathryn Atwood, dressed in period costumes, delighted the audience with tunes such as “We Are Coming Father Abram,” “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

The harmonized melodies of the spirituals like “Steal Away to Jesus” were especially beautiful since imagery of the song, while remaining religious actually alluded to being freed from slavery.
