Senior Advisor: A nostalgic look at the family dinner

As an owner of a senior housing facility for 30 years, I have been in close contact with seniors under nearly all types of circumstances in their lives. I gladly share the insights I have learned.

Do you remember family dinners?  Whether your idea of a nostalgic family meal involves spaghetti and meat balls or pot roast and mashed potatoes on Sunday afternoon or roasted chicken accompanied by the traditional challah at a Friday night Shabbat, no matter what your ethnic heritage the traditional family dinner seems to have gone the way of the horse and buggy for most people.

In my own life, I’ve found that meal time with family and friends is a time to cherish.  As people gather around a table and share a meal, there is something special about the conversation and intimacy of eating with others.  If you remember the days before dishwashers, you know that even clearing the table and washing and drying the dishes together offered an opportunity to talk.

If you long to make meal time a special time again, you may want to choose to live in a retirement community like The Summit of Uptown.  The Summit’s full-service dining package features your choice of meal plans and savory home-style meals prepared and served to you by friendly wait-staff. As you build new relationships at Summit, you’ll find like-minded folks to share your table, where conversation will center on your shared interests, goals and lifetime memories
