About 600 Shop Morton Grove Farmers Market

Hear from Market Manager Kristina Otte about the first week, and what's coming in the second.

Sultry temperatures did not keep the crowds away for Opening Day at the Morton Grove Farmers' Market this past Saturday, June 4.

We had more than 600 people come out (despite the Amazon-rainforest-like weather conditions) to enjoy the spring produce, all the wonderful offerings from our vendors, and the special events.

Our featured vendor was JoynPure Honey Nut Snacks, a local business created last year that offers healthy delicious snacks made right here in Morton Grove.

We were honored to have the local Boy Scout troop hold a formal flag ceremony, have a Park View Elementary student sing the National Anthem, and have local officials on hand for our second annual ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Golf Middle School students came too, with their acclaimed jazz band playing tunes and their show choir singing Abba classics from Mama Mia! (I enjoyed it so much, I actually asked their teacher if they accept 40 year old market managers in the choir, sadly she turned me down.)

Next week is Dairy Day at the Market, where we celebrate all-things-milk.

The Cheese People will be our featured vendor, so be sure to stop by their booth and sample their amazing variety of cheeses.

We'll also have Lifeway Kefir, my family's personal addiction!

Oberweis Dairy will be here too, offering samples of their milk and signing people up for milk delivery at home, the old-fashioned way.

We're hoping to have ice cream too, so cross your fingers!

If you're lactose-intolerant, come anyway, since we have lots more fantastic vendors with NO dairy products, such as baked goods from Maier's Bakery and LeFlour Bakery, olive oils, salsas, barbecue sauces, honey, candles, locally made bodycare products, chocolate-dipped goodies, honey-nut snacks, Super Cup coffee and lemonade, and alpaca wool products.

You can even learn how to spin wool into yarn at the Albo Alpaca booth, on the south side of the market. Stop by and ask Barb for advice as she spins in the shade.

This week's musical entertainment is the renowned Jim Jacobs Quintet, plus Master Gardener Pat Reband will be at the Welcome Booth answering questions about tomatoes.

The Morton Grove Gardening Club and the Environmental Health Commission will be available, as well as face painting and henna tattoos at the MG Library booth.

Come one, come all! Thanks!  See you at the Market!
