Dominick's To Leave Morton Grove

Prairie View Plaza is being redeveloped. But the village thought Dominick's would stay, the Morton Grove Champion reported.

Dominick's, the only full-service grocery store in Morton Grove, will not stay in the village after its lease expires next April, the Morton Grove Champion reported.

Dominick's and Produce World have been the village's two main grocers. Produce World moved to an expanded location at Harlem and Dempster in Morton Grove about two years ago.

Dominick's is the mainstay of Prairie View Plaza at the southeast corner of Waukegan Road and Dempster Street, arguably the village's most central intersection.

It's unclear which grocery store might relocate to Prairie View Plaza. Fresh Farms is building a second location in Niles, filling a vacated Jewel-Osco space. Skokie is getting a Mariano's on Touhy near McCormick. Park Ridge is getting a Whole Foods on Touhy Avenue.

The village of Morton Grove has been working on a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district for Prairie View Plaza for more than a year, holding a public meeting in May 2012 to announce they would be seeking new tenants,  Patch.com reported at that time.

Alan Saposnik, a development manager for the center's owner, Federal Construction, said at that time the stores may be moved back (away from Dempster Street) about 25 feet to create a larger parking area, Patch.com reported.

One purpose of the TIF would be to renew and reinvigorate the area. As part of that, Saposnik said the parking lot would be resurfaced.
