EuroPlate Restaurant Opens In Niles

Three sisters, all Maine East grads, have opened an eatery offering homemade Polish and Eastern European food. They use their mother's recipes from Europe, including pierogi, cutlets and goulash served with a potato pancake.

Patricia and Kinga Stefanska, who are 28-year-old twins, and their older sister Iwona, 29, say it was natural for the three of them to open a restaurant.

"Our mom cooked pretty much every day, and we were always interested in it," said Patricia. "Whenever we would get a chance we would get in the kitchen and learn as much as we could from her."

Their mom, Roma, used to run two restaurants back in their native Poland, said the twins, who grew up in Des Plaines, attended Maine East High School and have lived in Morton Grove in more recent years.

"We love good homemade food," Kinga said, explaining the sisters wanted to bring homemade Polish cooking to the north end of Niles. The restaurant is at 8482 W. Golf Road, next to Jersey Mike's in an outlot of Walmart.

They're appealing to Poles, Russians and other eastern/central Europeans with their cooking, which runs from stuffed cabbage and breaded pork and chicken cutlets to pierogi, Polish sausage and Hungarian goulash with a potato pancake and sour cream.

The twins say their gofry, home-made waffles with fresh berries and whipped cream, are not to be missed.

The small restaurant has four tables, but the sisters are planning on putting in a window counter with bar stools for more seating. They also do carry out and catering.
