Six Flavors of Fat Fun to Enjoy Fat Tuesday

Morton Grove Patch peeks inside the kitchen at Maier's Bakery to learn more about Mardi Gras traditions.

Morton Grove's local homestead for all things sweet, baked and caked - - plans to sell about 5,000 paczkis on Tuesday for Fat Tuesday, as part of the tradition to observe the onset of Lent in the Christian churches.

In celebration of such sugary subjects, Morton Grove Patch stopped by the bakery to learn about the method behind the magic of the traditional Polish doughnut.

Co-owner Frank Silvio said that the paczkis come with no less than six fillings: banana custard, strawberry, strawberry banana, strawberry custard, strawberry fudge, strawberry and strawberry whip cream.

At $1.85 a pop, these treats take quite a pounding before hitting the fryer and ultimately the selling shelves, as the Patch video illustrates.

Maier's also sells King Cakes in honor of Fat Tuesday, so stop by before they sell out. Doors open at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday!

Music for the video was produced by Josh Moshier.

Stopped by Maier's this morning to pick up my family's favorites -- Nutella-filled and custard & strawberry-filled paczki. Delicious! Wishing everyone a happy "Fat Tuesday"!

Hi Comment Guy, Thanks for asking! I was finding that we would get a lot of people guessing forRead More some restaurants (usually when there was a payoff of free pizza), and not very many people entering for other restaurants. Do you think we should bring them back? I'm open to people's opinions. --Pam

Hi Pam, Yes, I thought it would be great if we brought it back. For me personally, whenever I wouldRead More seed the contest on my Twitter timeline, I would immediately go to the site. And if there is an offer of free food even better. It does not even necessarily be a restaurant as it can also be any other type of business, i.e., bakery, retail, gym, car services, etc.
