Frozen Yogurt Shop Opens in Park Ridge's Uptown

Menchie's will offer free frozen yogurt Saturday; it also has a party room for birthday parties, Scout meetings. The California franchiser has about 300 locations and has teamed with a dairy to make its own yogurt.

Whenever customers step into the Menchie's frozen yogurt shop, which opened Monday at 110 N. Northwest Highway in Park Ridge, manager Geoff Bryant gives them a quick tour.

He points out the eight frozen yogurt machines, which dispense 16 flavors; the complimentary waffle bowls and the candy, nut and fruit toppings available. There are also usually two sorbets and two low-carb, non-sugar flavors of yogurt, he adds.

Despite Thursday's drizzle, customers came in to the brightly-colored shop throughout the afternoon. Franchise owner Randy Sturges was also on hand to greet them.

Menchie's, a California-based franchise which has about 300 locations, distinguishes itself from the competition because all of its yogurts are produced by Scott's Dairy in California, they said.

"We are the only one that has our own private-label yogurt," said Bryant. "And Menchie's is doing an awesome job coming up with great flavors."

Menchie's also offers a party room, which can be booked for kids' birthday parties, Scout meetings, church groups and the like. Bryant said the store asks groups to purchase at least $30 in yogurt to use the room, which must be reserved with an advance phone call.

Park Ridge Mayor Dave Schmidt will do the ribbon cutting Saturday, April 13 at 11 a.m., and Menchie's will offer free frozen yogurt from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

They will also offer promotional specials each day through April 19.
