Greek Paper Names Niles-Glenview-Lincolnwood 'Greektown North'

The Greek Star newspaper issues a special report saying as many as 10,000 Greeks live in these burbs, plus Skokie, Morton Grove, Des Plaines and Mount Prospect. Greek businesses have sprung up to serve them.

Drive through Niles, and you'll see , , , and other Greek businesses.

St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Des Plaines is just two minutes to the west, and Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, as well as Periyali Restaurant, is slightly to the north in Glenview.

Jog over to Morton Grove, and you'll find Produce World and the Institute for Greek Language and Culture. 

The Greek Star newspaper has cited all these examples in a special report that concludes the area centered between Niles, Glenview and Lincolnwood, and also including Skokie, Des Plaines, Park Ridge, Morton Grove and Mount Prospect, is now "Greektown North."

The 2010 census showed more than six times as many Greek Americans live in the Chicago suburbs as in the city, the magazine said. Some estimates put as many as 10,000 Greeks in the area. Most moved from Chicago to the suburbs in recent decades, the magazine said.

"This is our 31st year, so we're probably the oldest Greek restaurant in the area," said Athena Merageas of Mykonos Restaurant. "There's been a tremendous growth of Greeks in the area.

"A lot has to do with the school districts and park districts in the area. And we do have a large proportion of Greek clientele."
