Manager: Golf Mill's Sears Will Survive Cuts

He doesn't see Niles store as one of the underperformers.

After Sears Holdings Corp. announced Tuesday it would close as many as 120 stores, one expert said it's unlikely the Niles store would be among them.

"This store is one of their top performers in the district," said Mike Williams, general manager of Golf Mill Shopping Center, where the is located.

Sears also owns the store building and the parcel of land it sits on, Williams said, two factors which solidify the company's stake in Niles.

"They've been here for 50 years and we expect them to be here for another 50," he said.

Sears' decision to close lower-performing stores comes less than two weeks after Illinois legislators voted to grant the company $15 million in tax breaks, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The Tribune also quotes Gov. Pat Quinn as saying he hopes Sears will not close stores in Illinois after the deal. State Sen. Ira Silverstein, whose district includes part of Niles, is quoted in the Tribune as saying he feels betrayed by Sears.
