Morton Grove, Niles Eateries Make 'Best' List

The Chicago Reader names top eateries and markets in the suburbs, and Morton Grove and Niles make the short list.

Morton Grove and Niles made a splashy showing in the Chicago Readers's listing of suburban restaurants worth the drive.

Out of 12 restaurants listed for the north/northwest suburbs, the newspaper's writers put two Morton Grove restaurants, Chun Ju, a Korean restaurant at 5707 W. Dempster, and , at 8541 N. Ferris, on their lists.

They praised the stews, including goat, beef, tripe and monkfish, at Chun Ju, and they liked Burt's balance of pizza ingredients and caramelized crust. The fact it must be ordered one to two days in advance adds to the mystique, in addition to the fact it was featured on the cover of Saveur magazine.

Not to be outdone, Niles made the newspaper's list of best markets with in Civic Center Plaza (Waukegan Road and Oakton Street)  and , at 5740 W. Touhy. The Reader's writers liked the "oceanic depth" of Fresh Farm's fish department, as well as its variety of produce and its deli department. They also praised the bakery, kimchi selection, live fish selection, and huge produce selection at Super H.

Another one of Morton Grove's best is Kappy's - also chosen by Chicago Magazine - as one of the Top 25 Breakfast spots in the metro area a few months back (run by Niles resident, George Alpogianis). Take a look at MGTV's program that features Kappy's at Dempter & Harlem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8-776QtyJU

Our neighbor suburb Skokie has two outstanding restaurants which are both a little different in cuisine and should be tried. Chicago Mag. actually lists Tub Tim Thai as one of the choices each month. Very good Thai food and some items not on most Thai menus. And Kabul House is excellent Afghan cuisine. There are not many Afghan restaurants so the adventuresome should try it-similar to other middle eastern food. Tub and Kabul both on Oakton. Tub serves beer and wine. Kabul lets you bring it in.

Good point, Mark, Kappy's deservedly got the Top 25 award. And Tony, I want to try Kabul House, and I'll put Tub Tim Thai on my list, too.
