Morton Grovers Save Big on Electricity

It achieved one of the lowest rates in the state for aggregated electricity, said a spokesperson for the energy consultant which helped Morton Grove aggregate.

After Morton Grove residents voted to take part in a type of volume discount program for electricity services last year, the results are in.

The average single-family household saved $264 for the nine months from September 2012 to May 2013, said Sharon Durling, director of marketing for the Northern Illinois Municipal Electric Cooperative, (NIMEC) at the Morton Grove board meeting Monday.

That is based on the exact number of kilowatt hours of electricity Morton Grove households used last year through May 31, Durling said after her presentation.

Extrapolating that data out to an entire year, Morton Grove residents would save $366 for a 12-month period, based on the current rate.

That rate is 4.420 cents per kilowatt hour, which Durling said was very good compared to the ComEd rate of 8.302 cents per kilowatt hour.

“You are one of the few communities in Illinois to achieve almost a 50 percent savings,” she told trustees and residents at the meeting.

The village will shortly be going up to bid for the next contract period for electricity, which will start June 1.

Durling commended Village Administrator Ryan Horne and his staff for providing them data to meet tight deadlines set by regulators.
