Niles Ranks 7th In Illinois In Retail Sales

Niles, a retail powerhouse, traditionally ranks high among Illinois municipalities which bring in the highest number of retail dollars.

Next time you see vehicle traffic backed up in Niles, don't grumble. Instead look at it this way: all these shoppers are coming to spend money in Niles stores, adding to the village's tax base and effectively keeping residents' taxes lower.

The village ranked seventh in Illinois for retail sales, having rung up 1.45 billion at the cash register in 2012, according to a Melaniphy & Associates April 2013 newsletter. That's up almost 5 percent over 2011, according to the company, a retail analyst.

Chicago ranked number one in the report, followed by Schaumburg and Naperville, then Aurora, Joliet, Orland Park and Niles. Skokie was in eighth place, followed by Glenview, Bolingbrook and Vernon Hills.
