St. John Brebeuf Second Grader Wins "Slap Shot" Prize

Many students, guests, friends and parents from St. John Brebeuf (SJB) as well as neighbors from Niles and Morton Grove enjoyed the first-ever ice rink during Catholic Schools Week at the Niles school. Among those on opening day was Maximillian Stalenczyk, a second grader, who took home more than bragging rights.

Located on the south lawn of the school, the rink was the idea of Pastor Michael Meany and built by a team led by John Jekot and members of the Men's Club. It has drawn good local attention and the notice of the headquarters staff at the Chicago Archdiocese Office of Catholic Education.

All those participating in the slap shot contest on Jan. 28 were given a ticket for a drawing. Max who also attends the Polish School at SJB won the prize of a Blackwawks inspired flashing red light with also sounds a horn like the one heard at the United Center after one of the Blackhawks players scores a goal. Now how cool is that!!

The prize was supplied by the SJB Men's Club which also provided hot dogs, chili and other treats including hot chocolate in the Flanagan Center during Open House Sunday when the ice rink opened.

The public is invited to enjoy the ice rink as weather permits. The official hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. For further information, call 847-966-3266 or visit www.sjbschool.org.
